On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the 2nd Year American Studies MA students, who take an American poetry class taught by Patty Seyburn, attended an online zoom dialogue between the two poets about living a poet’s life, poetic influences and affinities, poetry movements, the poetic canon and its limitations, poetic temperaments, poets and language, American poetry, Latin American poetry, Eastern European poetry, how the arts instigate one another, and the poets’ social club. The event was organized by Patty Seyburn and Dana Bădulescu, who teach the same group of students.
On November 19, 2024, the members of the English Department at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi had the pleasure and honor of welcoming the Cultural Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest, Mr. Peter Brown, and Ms. Irina Nițu, American Spaces Director.
The members of our Department and their guests cordially discussed the future of the American Studies programs at our University.

On Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, our students and staff were delighted to take part in a meeting with U.S. Vice-Consul Tamara Mitchell. A diplomat with an impressive career, Tamara Mitchell talked about her profession and what it entails, and presented the opportunities offered to Romanian students by the U.S. Work and Travel program.
Tamara Mitchell joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 2012 and worked in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire, Santiago, Chile, Dakar, Senegal, Vienna, Austria and now Romania. She holds a B.S. in Agricultural Development from Texas A&M University and an M.S. in International Relations from Webster University. Prior to joining the foreign service she was the deputy Director of operations at a nuclear technology police nonprofit and worked for the humanitarian aid organization Mercy Corps.
Last week, the English Department was delighted to be involved in a series of activities organised under the aegis of FILIT 2024.
With congratulations to all those involved, here are some accounts of what happened.

On Thursday, October 24th 2024, from 2 to 4 p.m., in lecture hall III.12, the Translation Studies students and those interested in translation attended a FILIT event, organized in partnership with the English Department. The event brought together Irish writer Naoise Dolan and the translator of two of her books, Mihaela Buruiană, an alumna of the translation studies BA programme of the English Department of Iași.
Clémentine Savard, a student from Sorbonne Nouvelle University, Paris, France, has just finished her Erasmus+ study mobility at the English Department. Clémentine spent an academic year here studying English and American literature, and she was kind enough to leave us some thoughts about her experience in Iasi. ?
